Is Drinking Dandelion Root Tea Beneficial?

Throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas you will find an herb called Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). Dandelion root has been used for centuries treating many types of ailments yet we often look at it as a humble weed and as a nuisance when it comes to lawn care.

People use dandelion commonly as a diuretic. It makes people want to urinate so as to remove excess fluids within the body. If you drink dandelion root tea or take a dandelion supplement, you will be able to shed this water which is helpful in losing weight. When a woman has menstrual cycle they usually retain water in their abdomen which make them gain inches, and one way to get rid of these inches is by taking dandelion root tea. The weight loss element of dandelion root became popular with body builders. A well toned and trimmed muscle is the aim of body builders and this can be done by removing as much moisture from your body.

However, using diuretics on a regular basis is not really wise. Diuretics take out potassium from our bodies which is important for maintaining proper health and prevents dehydration especially for body builders or anyone else who does workouts. Dandelion root tea, however, is a diuretic which is also rich in potassium and has the benefit of protecting the kidneys from the side effects of supplements such as creatine.

Other uses of dandelion root tea is as a drink to increase appetite and as a laxative to remove body wastes that have guild up over time. Taking dandelion root can remove toxins from the body and encourage digestive regularity to remove unnecessary salts and additives that the body does not need.

Just a warning to say that you should not take dandelion root tea or supplements exclusively as a long-term solution for weight loss since the body will need a chance to replenish some of the nutrients that have been lost. Dandelion root tea can also be used to speed up your urinary system and to help kick start a diet.

Although there is no recommended dosage for dandelion root, you should not also take too much of it because it can lead to heartburn, diarrhea, and upset stomach. Avoid dandelion root if you have gall bladder problems or if you are allergic to ragweed, marigold, chamomile or chrysanthemum. Drinking an entire glass of water is necessary when using dandelion root since it is considered a diuretic. If you have a medical condition where you are taking regular medication, or if you are pregnant or is breastfeeding your baby, then you should take caution is taking dandelion root tea, and for your safety’s sake, you should go to your doctor to consult if drinking the tea would be beneficial or not.
