Students are increasingly looking beyond the US and UK for their education, according to a 2024 survey. While these countries remain popular, there’s a noticeable shift towards Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada, Australia, and China.

The 2024 Destination Survey revealed that 71% of Cambridge graduates studying abroad chose one of these four countries. However, the 2025 cohort saw a drop to 64%. This change is partly due to visa restrictions, the rising cost of overseas education, and the improving quality of universities in other locations.

A Broader Horizon

Students are now applying to multiple destinations, not just their home country. Mike Nicholson, Director of Recruitment, Admissions, and Participation at the University of Cambridge, notes that students typically apply to two other countries besides their own. This global outlook is encouraged by courses like Global Perspectives, helping students find the right fit.

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has climbed the QS university rankings, moving from 17th to 11th globally. Bennett Yim, Director of Undergraduate Admissions and International Student Exchange at HKU, attributes this popularity to Cambridge students’ critical thinking, independence, and passion for learning.

This trend is not limited to Hong Kong. Universities in Indonesia and Pakistan have made it to the top 20 destinations for Cambridge students for the first time. Teachers report that students are considering a broader range of options, with Italy, Spain, and Ireland gaining popularity.

Australia’s Appeal

This trend may grow as Cambridge International A Level students can now be considered for an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) outcome, providing an equitable route into Australian universities.

While the US and UK remain the top destinations, the shift towards multi-destination applications and proximity is undeniable. This change reflects a more global outlook among students, who are increasingly seeking the best fit for their educational needs, regardless of traditional preferences.

The changing market of student destinations highlights a growing awareness of the diverse opportunities available worldwide. As visa restrictions and tuition fees influence choices, students are exploring new horizons, ensuring their education aligns with their global aspirations.
