New research based on over 23,000 teacher-designed AI lessons shows the technology is being used to strengthen critical thinking in classrooms. The analysis focused on “Spaces”—custom AI learning environments created by educators in English, math, science, and social studies. Results indicate that 73% of these lessons required conceptual understanding, while 59% asked students to analyze information and 58% involved evaluating ideas.

Caleb Hicks, founder and CEO of SchoolAI, stated the data reveals how teachers are actually using AI, rather than just speculating about its potential impact. “When teachers design the experience and set clear expectations, AI becomes a way to push students toward deeper reasoning, analysis, and judgment. It supports rigorous thinking rather than replacing it, which is why AI can be a valuable tool for classroom learning,” he said.

How teachers are shaping AI use

The report found that over 75% of AI-supported lessons remained grounded in core academic curriculum, showing that educators are extending familiar instruction rather than replacing it. In science classrooms, roughly 25 percent of Spaces encouraged open-ended investigation, while role-play and simulation appeared in 18-20 percent of reading and social studies lessons.

Educators also appear to be establishing boundaries to prevent misuse. Teachers reinforce learning instead of simply looking up answers by designing experiences that push students toward deeper reasoning, not shortcuts.

Cynthia Chiong, principal research scientist at SchoolAI, explained the study focused on actual classroom practices. “We wanted to understand the kinds of thinking teachers are intentionally asking for when AI is involved. The findings offer concrete evidence of how teacher-led design shapes meaningful and responsible use of AI in real classrooms,” she said.

Challenges to assumptions about AI in education

The research emerges amid ongoing debates about AI’s role in schools. While concerns about cheating and overdependence on technology persist, this study suggests that when educators control the design, AI can support rather than undermine learning.

For instance, the data revealed that higher-order thinking tasks were more common than simple recall exercises. This trend applied across all grade levels, from elementary to high school.

The findings arrive as many districts are still forming policies around AI use. Some have banned it entirely, while others are testing limited pilots. This research provides a look at what is already happening in classrooms where teachers have taken the initiative.

The authors hope the data will help move discussions from fear to practical application. Hicks emphasized that the focus should not be on AI replacing teachers. “It supports rigorous thinking rather than replacing it,” he said.
