MIND Education has launched InsightMath, a K-6 math curriculum designed around neuroscience principles. The program uses visual-first instruction and game-based puzzles to engage students, aiming to build confident mathematical thinkers. This approach is rooted in over 25 years of research, ensuring that the curriculum aligns with how the brain naturally learns, making it unique in the field of math education.

A Brain-Based Approach to Math

Developed with neuroscientists and educators, InsightMath focuses on spatial-temporal reasoning and visual problem-solving. This method, proven in MIND’s ST Math program, has shown measurable gains in student achievement across diverse schools. By leveraging the brain’s innate ability to process spatial and temporal information, InsightMath helps students develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. The curriculum is designed to support curiosity and encourage students to actively engage with math, rather than passively receiving information.

“Students need to do math, not just observe it,” said Brett Woudenberg, CEO of MIND Education. The curriculum encourages productive struggle and classroom discourse, supporting a growth mindset. Woudenberg emphasizes that this hands-on approach allows students to build a foundational understanding of math that they can carry throughout their lives. By making predictions, testing ideas, and revising strategies, students learn to think critically and solve problems independently.

InsightMath includes digital tools, printed materials, and manipulatives to create an intentional learning experience. Emily Landrum, a Math Specialist, praised the program for shifting focus from teacher lectures to student exploration. This shift not only enhances student engagement but also allows teachers to act as facilitators, guiding students through their learning journey. The program’s integrated resources ensure that both educators and students have the tools they need to succeed.

For students, this approach means solving problems by testing ideas and revising strategies. In practice, this could mean a child tackling a geometry puzzle by manipulating shapes, then discussing their approach with peers—a stark contrast to traditional rote learning. This collaborative and interactive process helps students internalize mathematical concepts and develop a growth mindset, where challenges are seen as opportunities to learn and grow.

Nationwide Availability and Future Plans

InsightMath is available nationwide, with tailored versions submitted for adoption in Texas and California. These tailored versions ensure that the curriculum meets state-specific standards while maintaining its core principles. By addressing the unique needs of different regions, InsightMath aims to provide a high-quality math education to students across the country.

Planned enhancements include small-group activities, a Spanish-language version, and support for Transitional Kindergarten in California. These additions will further differentiate the curriculum, making it accessible to a broader range of students and educational settings. The Spanish-language version, in particular, will help address the needs of English language learners, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed in math.

The program builds on ST Math’s success, which reached 2.17 million students and 115,000 educators in the 2023-24 school year. InsightMath aims to scale this impact by offering a core curriculum rather than a supplemental tool.
