
The value of homework remains one of education’s most persistent debates, with research suggesting the answer depends heavily on grade level, assignment quality, and student circumstances. For some, homework reinforces learning and builds study habits; for others, it is unnecessary busywork that fuels stress and disengagement. Decades of studies show that the truth lies somewhere in between, with homework providing increasing benefits as students mature.
Homework’s Value Shifts With Grade Level
A 2017 meta-analysis found that the academic impact of homework for students in grades 1–4 is limited, with a small effect size of 0.21. That effect grows steadily through upper elementary school and into high school, rising by 95 percent for grades 5–8 and 129 percent for grades 9–12, respectively. Researchers note that as students develop skills like problem-solving and critical thinking, the academic value of homework begins to take shape.
For younger children, play may do more to build academic skills and emotional regulation than nightly worksheets. A 2023 study found positive links between time spent playing at home and self-regulation, as well as early prereading and math skills a year later. A 2025 study of fourth graders concluded that cortisol levels more than tripled when recess was cut short, highlighting the costs of displacing play with homework.

This pattern is not new to education researchers. The idea that older students benefit more from structured out-of-class work aligns with developmental psychology, which notes that executive function and time-management skills typically solidify in adolescence. What is often overlooked is that the same assignments that feel pointless to a third grader can feel purposeful to a tenth grader — not because the content changed, but because the student’s capacity to engage with it did.
Quality Matters More Than Quantity
Not all homework is created equal. A 2022 study compared math and writing homework for 440 second graders and found that literacy practice led to major gains in grammar and spelling that persisted four months later. Math homework, by contrast, did little to improve outcomes beyond what students had already achieved in class, largely because it was rote repetition of the same problems.
For older students, high-quality homework that extends classroom thinking can improve learning and engagement. In a 2024 study of nearly 1,000 fifth- and sixth-grade students, researchers found that assignments asking students to prepare mini-lessons or debate public issues led to better emotional and behavioral engagement compared with rote tasks. Students who experienced regular, thoughtful homework “showed positive emotions, were happier in school and were more interested in the classroom,” the study found.

International data reinforces the value of moderate, consistent effort. A 2014 analysis of PISA scores found that high school students who spent at least an hour each day on math homework significantly outperformed those who did none, with scores jumping from 481 to 514. Scores rose further to 542 for students putting in between one and two hours, but then plateaued and declined after three hours, suggesting that piling on excessive homework may lead to worse outcomes.
The Stress and Equity Costs of Homework
While homework can be academically beneficial, it comes with real costs. A 2025 Challenge Success survey of more than 28,000 students found that homework and overall workload ranked as one of the top sources of stress for middle and high school students, surpassing concerns about time management, sleep, and even worries about the future. Meanwhile, 56 percent of students said at least some of their classes regularly assign homework they see as meaningless busywork.
A 2021 report echoed these findings, noting that “students often perceive their homework load to be excessive while not necessarily useful.” A 2025 study found that some adolescents sacrifice sleep to meet homework demands, resulting in anxiety and depression. Researchers suggest schools set more reasonable homework limits to protect adolescent sleep and mental health.

Equity is another major concern. According to a 2022 Pew Research Center survey, more than a third of students from low-income households are cell phone–dependent for homework, about double the rate of wealthier peers. Only 8 percent of teens from high-income families lack computer or internet access, compared with 24 percent of teens from families under financial strain. A 2017 study of middle school homework found that teachers often misjudge how long assignments take, with less academically advantaged students struggling the most.
To address these issues, educator Megan Pacheco suggests a homework audit: setting aside 10–20 minutes at the end of class for students to begin their homework, which reveals “how long tasks actually take” and uncovers “hidden barriers like gaps in skills, unclear instructions, or missing prior knowledge.” Second-grade teacher Jacqueline Worthley Fiorentino argues that “the minor academic benefits to assigning mandatory nightly homework simply do not outweigh the substantial drawbacks” for young children. It is OK to skip a few assignments if kids are overwhelmed, she says.
